Why Sketch?

It’s important to understand why you want to sketch so that your drawing methods and tools can be oriented around your goal. Should you use the grid method? Should you trace or use a projection device? You should try everything but what you use regularly depends on your own needs.

Some people sketch so that they can capture moments; real, imaginary, and in between. It’s not really about “creating art”, it’s more about capturing moments, feelings or ideas.

One of the things I love about sketching is that you can capture things that you can't actually see or photograph. As an example, I recently went on a road trip with my family. I sketched a picture of my car gliding down the road with a BMX bike on the back and mountains in the distance in front of us. Of course, I couldn’t see my car from the back. I took a mental picture of the road and the mountains and then sketched it later with a picture of the back of the car as a reference. It would have been pretty difficult to capture a picture of the moment itself.
